“In the 90s, a friend of mine gave me a copy of Weetzie Bat by Francesca Lia Block and told me to read it. ‘You are Weetzie,’ she said. I took the tiny book and devoured it in one sitting. 

My friend was correct - I did indeed see myself in the main character. Block’s word pictures and storylines inspired me to write my first novel, Velvet, in 2016. As an artist who has been making portraits for over 45 years, I have long wanted to portray Weetzie in an art piece. This painting represents the genie lamp that Dirk’s Grandmother Fifi bestows upon her. Weetzie is looking at you as she is just about to ask the genie for her three wishes. Will she receive them? And if so, will she be happy with them? Turn the page and see.”
